The History of the Roman Empire
Latin was not an unknown language on the island prior to the claudian invasion. The britons were wearing togas, building temples and even speaking latin. Once the romans occupied the south, the spread of latin occurred rapidly. By some accounts, the british version of latin was actually a more pure and grammatically correct version than what you would have heard on the streets of rome.
