The Importance of Democracy in the 1980s
In the 1980s, hunger strikes in Northern Ireland threatened to plunge both jurisdictions into something potentially approaching a civil war situation. "I thought of it as a problem relating to the intellectual complexities attached to the norm of democracy," he says. His 2015 monograph, Empire in Revolution, was praised for its encompassing portrait of Edmund Burke's thought.
