Jonathan Lehman: What happens here just boils down to superstition. This is like an ancient Near Eastern fertility belief, you know, that they think that somehow these mandreks are going to result in the ability to conceive children. But notice how in verse 17, it says, God listened to Leah. It does not attribute the fertility that results to the mandreks and because of those mandreks, Leah was able to conceive again. We can say on the basis of what we now know scientifically, which science arises because of the way that the Bible influences how people think,. That's why she wants these fertility drugs.
