Prussia and Austria had been bitter rivals for most of the 18th century. But in early 1792, Frederick William entered the war against France. Within a few months they were joined by Spain, Portugal, and the Dutch Republic. And as Holy Reminemperer, Leopold II of Austria took all the small states of Germany to war too. Ironically, Great Britain, France's greatest geopolitical rival, was the last to join in.
