Both feel like modulations you think you're just doing a real simple chord progression that you've heard a zillion times but you don't expect this chord to come in and that takes it somewhere else. David Bowie used to do it all the time and really in ways that were really simple so when I write songs that's what's going to make me think that something's interesting right? It reminds me of like 60s instrumental music yeah and at the same time like punk songs because they're all major chords a lot of the time they're often doing modulations within themselvesjust because of which major chords they're sticking next to each other.
