Hugh Vericker: Henry James' play Guy Domville was a huge flop. He didn't even go to see his own play, which might be why he thought he could take the stage afterward. "The experience has completely sickened me with the theater and made me feel at any rate for the present ... like washing my hands of it forever," said one letter from James. The author's wife committed suicide after she found out that her husband had written an anti-gay play.
