Theory is not my theory, but it's one that i subscribe to for how consciousness arose over the course of evolution and what it's useful for. We're primates, and for at least the last 25 million years, and maybe longer, we've lived in social groups. And as the a behaviora repertoire, became more sophisticated, the models became more complex. This leads to a situation where you have most behaviour happening autonomously,. if you like. Then the conscious part of us is this part that is apparently predicting our own behaviour. So we're really fooling ourselves. Fascinating.
