The Importance of Historical Conscience in the Humanities and Social Sciences
The point of the project was to recover the importance of historical consciousness generally in the humanities and social sciences. We started very much with an awareness of that and thinking about these facts juxtaposed with the modern state of the disciplines which are often self-consciously un or anti-historical. I don't think history should be an instrument of criticism, it should be a tool of inquiry but once you've reconstructed the relevant world you're addressing historically I think it's just unrealistic not to think that your interest is actually practical.
