The book sets up a range of possible violations that may again happen throughout even when they're not happening. The Greek which he characterizes is optimistic in the sense that it's motivated by the belief that language, if you use enough of it, can succeed at describing. For instance, when faith asks Isabel a question, Isabel is distracted about a future class. She's distracted by a future class where she will be teaching the Duchess of Longe by Balzac. Instead of us learning simply that she is distracted, because we're sort of feeling like faith might be the protagonist, so we sort of also expect maybe to be in faith's point of view.
