Hemoglobin saturation is to an extent determined by the partial pressure of oxygen. The lowest hemoglobin concentration that was recorded in any surviving human being was about 10 grams per liter. If you, oh, why not just prop their hemoglobin up to normal? Let's put them up to 15 and you could watch the flow go down on your pump because it's a much more viscous blood.
