Chinese characters are phonetic, but not in a way that's nearly as transparent as western alphabet. So by looking at them, you don't necessarily know how to pronounce it. You could tell thet english spoken in the forties and fifties was very different from what we speak now. And so chinese characters kind of drifted in pronounce overtime, and there was no way to really keep track of that. Now they had an internal phonetic system that they could use to sound out o character, soundingho character was supposed to be pronounced. But that didn't really hold water over long period of time.
