The Essenes and the Crisis in Judaism
In the second century BC, there is a classic crisis in Judaism of Hellenization. Jonathan Maccabees was appointed as high priest by Antiochus Epiphanes. This seems to have spawned that general movement and at least three movements. The Sadducees go back to the sons of Zaidok; they are the ones who are truly the priestly families.
