Do We Know Why Some Words Survive?
Modern scholars have estimated that about 85% of the vocabulary of Old English has disappeared over time. A lot of those words were considered too fancy or highfalutin, and they just sort of disappeared. The language we speak is very different from the language that was spoken four or five centuries ago.
