The Origins of European Pyrotechny
The earliest record of European pyrotechny is in Claudius' account of the public festivities. Marcus Grechus, in his Lieber Ignium at Comberrendos Hostis, describes what is virtually the modern cracker and also a primitive form of rocket. Fryer Roger Bacon, 1214-1294, refers at least twice to compositions containing salt-peater, powdered charcoal, and sulfur.
