A bacteria is as successful as it's offspring. It doesn't replicate through sexual reproduction like we do. The bacteria today that we have will have a genetic memory of the viruses that infected it, possibly tens of thousands of generations, millions of generations ago.
In this episode, Dr Matt and Dr Mike discuss how humans realised that bacteria could fight off viruses using sequences in their DNA called, CRISPR. Today, CRISPR technology is being used to cure cancer and investigate the cause of genetic disease.
