Theology in the Early Church
For centuries after Jesus' death, it was basically a sentence to death if you held any hierarchy in the church. Tertullian says the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. So they already kind of even in the early, so this is second century, mid-second century, we have bishops from other countries, other parts of the world coming to Rome to ask questions.
