Introduction
When Sir Nicholas II became the Emperor of Russia in 1894, his empire was still regarded as a backwards, agrarian empire. The last European power to enact such changes, the empire continued to be plagued by far reaching agrarian challenges. Many peasants left the countryside for the cities, looking for work and better lives in the burgeoning factories. This movement from far into the city was rapidly creating and magnifying social tensions across the empire.
