How Do Speaking Valve Trials Work?
A speaking valve allows air in through the trache, but it forces air around the tube on exhalation. So with the speaking valve, the patient breathes out through their mouth and nose. And since that valve redirects airflow up through the vocal cords, instead of out of the traches, a patient is able to make sounds or phonate.
