Episode CLXXVIII - Witches in Roman Literature
Emperors of Rome
The Ghost of Erichtho
The book finishes very quickly with Erichtho burning the corpse to kill it again. Part of the horror that's being sought out here is that this is kind of the ultimate breaking of boundaries, because we've seen witches act in ways that Roman women shouldn't. She's breaking the boundary between life and death. So that's a huge taboo. And she is allowing knowledge of the future through this. The corpse also tells of a kind of civil war going on in the underworld. It really kind of wraps up the family this war.
