I think part of it is just pragmatism. Like, even if they want to live in a benevolent world, it's really hard to live in the world of politics and not have to make compromises. It's death of a thousand cuts. Most leaders don't have that and part of that is self selection. I've heard enough military leaders on podcast talk about this: How many 9-11s would there have been if the military wasn't doing their fucking job?
