Is the Soup Spattered Sunflowers Now a New Icon?
The image of the damaged painting itself becomes a new image of that artwork so in a sense it becomes an entirely different work. Certain monuments that are toppled become known more as images of toppled monuments than the original monument when it was still standing. It's interesting to see that certain attacks on artworks become symbols in themselves and then others just fade away. Do soup spattered sunflowers now itself become a new icon an emblematic icon for this struggle that we're hearing about from just up on? Time will tell.
