Bush House became the new home in London for the overseas service from 1941. It was a grand stone building near the River Thames, but the dormitories and offices inside were cramped. Some fluent linguist the BBC recruited was 22-year-old Martin Esslin. He would go on to become the head of BBC Radio drama.
