Chivalry Ethos

Chronicles are full of stories of warriors slaughtering their enemies and carrying on as they always had been. I think the idea of a chivalry ethos is very slow to take hold but it's there, that's the point of course in any historical moment you have the presence of past practice and an attempt to reform it. The Normans were particular beneficiaries of it, as Philip says with Gregory VII before he was posed for the 1066 edition. In Italy they set up Latin diocese, Latin Monasteries,. They made Greek monks turn into communities of Latin monks and it justified them joining the first crusade so they were very lucky.
