The Importance of Diversity in Music

The ease with which artists can get themselves on streaming site is a boon but it also means there's much fiercer competition to get your voice heard while the big music labels put their money behind dead certs. It becomes increasingly difficult to see whether the industry as it's currently structured encourages through reward a diverse range of talent. Late last year Taylor Swift became the first artist with all top 10 songs in the billboard Hot 100 and was widely lauded in the headlines. Is it evidence of a healthy and diverse culture in which an extraordinary talent has excelled or proof that the music industry is broken?
