Mutation is the word we used to describe when there's a random change in dana that creates a brand new trait. We've never seen before, a black coat color is a mutation that appeared in dogs. So finley's dogs probably got their head shapes with some combination of mutation and artificial selection. People started realizing they could also breed dogs to look certain ways about 250 years ago.
