How Old Norse Enhanced the English Vocabulary

Old norse not only enhanced the english vocabulary, it also re introduced a sound which had largely disappeared from the language. The word scathe is more common in its adjective form, scathing. English borrowed the viking word scoat, meaning a tax or payment. And the word sky was borrowed from the vikings. In old norse, the word sky actually just referred to a cloud. So anglo saxons borrowed that word and began to use it as a synonym for heaven.
