The Role of Anticoagulation in Dialysis

The original anticoagulate for blood dialysis is heparin, and this is still the mainstay in hemodialysis. The side effects that we see from heparin are that you can have heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. This can be particularly concerning if we have patients that need to go on dialysis after a surgical procedure. For this reason, anticoagulation in these modalities is required.
