There is precious little in the public record about what they could be or how they could work. The first official mention of interstage materials by the US government didn't come until 2007. We know precious little about Soviet interstage design, other than that it would have to be made of some very secret proprietary material. It is totally possible that red mercury was a Soviet solution to the interstage problem.
