Mike Downey: All of these committees that you just mentioned, I think they trace their roots, their DNA back to the Truman Committee and a few things. If somebody, for example, was summoned before the committee, Truman created the innovation. They were allowed to read an opening statement. But it was this willingness to totally focus on the facts. And then the other thing, Truman and his chief counsel, Hugh Fulton did, they tried to keep opinion out of it. The name of the book is The Watchdog, Have the Truman Committee, battled corruption and helped win World War II.
