In the old testament, forgiveness tends to be acquainted with not dying or experiencing bad things. Even though god is always willing to forgive people and take them to heaven when they repent, they may have to experience some consequences of their sins in this life. For example, if you've just pushed the launch button for the nuclear missiles, you may instantly repent of and go to heaven.
