The Unconstitutional Argument for Protective Tariffs
In 1832, the South argued that protective tariffs were unconstitutional. This led to a showdown with President Andrew Jackson who backed nullification. Henry Clay stepped in and worked out a compromise whereby the tariff would be lowered for the South but it would be lowered gradually over time so as to give the North more relief.
