The Magic of the Caribbean

The leading cargo carried to North America more tonnage than even sugar molasses or rum was salt. The British figured out that they could fish in Newfoundland harvest salt in the Caribbean and then ship it all back to Europe, sell it there and then eventually sell it in the Americas. And since Columbus and his Spanish successors had already annihilated the indigenous population these scarcely inhabited islands were easily converted into salt centers. Coney Island is one of the first salt works in America because we just couldn't get enough salt for all the fish that we were catching.
