The Importance of Infant Directed Communication
There's this rich literature on audience design, which is especially prominent in language. And one way to think about the way we speak to children or infants in particular is that they are a particular kind of audience. They are more ignorant and naive. There are various reasons why we might need to accommodate them. We actually do engage in infant directed versions of each of these communicative signals.
