Even back in ancient times, there was just no uniformity of the stories. One myth would apply to tiple gods. One god would have multiple names. And moreover, it was changing overtime. The story from two thousand b c was not the same as the story from 500 b c. So for people now to go back and look at these old myths and say, well, you know, we're going to pick it up where we left off doesn't make any sense.
