The History of Cavalry in the Napoleonic Wars
Cavalry made up about five to 20 % of a napoleonic army's strength. The british and prussians put more of an emphasis on infantry, so they were generally at the lower end of that range. Most cavalry units were issued short, compact muskets called carbines. Cavalry were also very expensive and difficult to supply. Every cavalry unit needed support staff dedicated to keeping its mounts healthy.
