The current that you're referring to is the Thermohaline current, but also known by its friendlier name, the Global Conveyor Belt. It's this circulation that in a sense is what drives the deep ocean circulation. And if we keep that ocean circulation from continuing via slowing down the global conveyor belt, then the ocean isn't able to be as helpful as it was in removing carbon dioxide for 10,000 years.
