The United States is a liberal democratic government of the kind that made figures such as the 19th century Pope Pius IX nervous. But by the middle of the 20th century, we see a Catholic community thriving in the United States next to Protestant churches and successful Jewish communities. And there's a reason I think that the church in the U.S. is healthier than any church in Europe with the exception of maybe Poland.
