The controversy is that we don't think this is a laudo aquiano ri e. And it's now known by the royal albert museum in exeter, which owns the painting, to be someone that nobody can identify. I thing people just assumed, if you saw a well dressed, confident looking african descended black man in the eighteenth century, who else could it be? There was only one right? But we do have an image of alaudoequiano quame from the front of his book. This is how he wanted people to understand him. The style is transcended senit. He's a vi yet very well dressed man, and he looks a nothing.
