The Normans were drawing up a plan to escalate their violence, says Odorik. So long as there were rebels in Northumbria, his grip on the throne would never be secure,. He said about a policy that, if it was enacted today, would be described as genocide. But in the 11th century, they gave it a euphemistic description: harrying.
