The wealthy paternalist could dispense with their wealth in a responsible way, building libraries while discouraging quote, the slothful, the drunken, the unworthy. And while Carnegie was ruthlessly expanding, paying politicians bribes and subjecting his employees to grim working conditions and paying them just above the poverty line.
