Coleridge Taylor met fellow Royal College of Music student Jesse Sarah Fleetwood Womisley in 1892. Her family was deeply opposed to the union and made some really gross and bigoted arguments about how marrying this man because of his race would ruin her life. In 1898, Coleridge Taylor had success with his original composition titled Balad in A Minor that won a claim at the Gloucester Three Choirs Festival. He also produced sequels to the very popular Hayawatha's wedding feast which debuted in October 1899 at North Staffordshire Music Festival. These three pieces of music were intended by Coleridge Taylors as a trilogy but did not garner the same level of praise on
