I worry that we've developed the technology so we know what's going on, but not so we can stop things happening. Will that change? Yes, it will. And my optimism is extremely buoyed by what happened with the messenger RNA vaccines. They weren't as good as we'd hoped, but they did prevent an enormous number of deaths and they were produced within a year.
