The Battle of Mucton
Just as the february acts were being issued, the russian army and japanese army squared off at the battle of mucten. It was one of the largest land battles in military history up to that point. Over the course of these grisly weeks, the russians took close to 90 thousand casualties between killed, captured, and wounded. The japanese rate was even worse. So both sides suffered enormously. But in the end, the russia army could not hold their line, and they fell back in chaotic and moralized retreat. In particular, the gruesome casualty rate lent further credence to accusations levelled at the regime that they were all incompetent
