Qualitative Research - Are Themes Constructed or Discovered?

In quality research, are themes constructed, or are they discovered? That depends on the view that you're taking towards your qualitative study and towards your data. Positivist notions of qualitied research would say that the themes are in the data to be found. And these themes just pop up passively ad nowhere. In contrast to the more constructivist view would say that themes are constructed through interacting with the data. It's the researcher that builds these themes through an interpretive process. So it's a much more active process. But certainly the idea that codes and categories and meaning just passively emerges naturally from the data and ensuing analysis is not very realistic.
