It seems a little sketch that they would not just keep this diary for the rest of the film. But yeah you might be right. They sort of is a plot device. It's funny how because we know Indiana Jones is like this very competent archaeologist and he gets his stuff out of scrapes but the way he meets his dad like they set this up to where like Henry Jones seniors free to think of his son as an idiot. One thing that's always bothered me about the subsequent scene where they're like tied up in the castle and they almost get burnt alive. This is the world's sloppiest kidnapping tie job.
