The History of David's Succession
According to the biblical story, they actually didn't seem to have much choice. All of those in Saul's family who were viable candidates died mysteriously or under questionable circumstances. So it becomes fairly evident that David may have had a hand in this. And then when the elders of Israel do come to David, they do so effectively because there is no one left.
