The story of automation for the Industrial Revolution was artificial simplicity powered by energy abundance. More recently, we have used control systems to sometimes reduce energy usage. I think that for the foreseeable future, when it comes to automation, either we are going to crack fully general artificial intelligence or we're just going to be worse workers. People love robots, like small children, if you talk to them, they love dinosaurs, they love space but there's always a minority of kids that's like, I'm a robot.
