A study recently found that expert chess players aren't necessarily thinking as much as you would think in like speed chess. They've just become so good at memorizing different chess positions and different strategies that it just comes automatically to them. The same thing can be seen in music, where people are able to let go with what the drummer or bass player is doing by letting pre-memorized riffs flow.
