Scientists have looked at the genes that we've retained and it seems to be that we were encountering various Neanderthal viruses. They are pretty similar to modern flu and modern HIV, HIV-AIDS. It would have taken the Neanderthals longer to overcome our diseases. And this provided us with a massive advantage in this struggle for existence.
