Gramsci: The Greatest Marxist Philosopher of All Time
In 1916, a 25-year-old named Antonio Gramsci wrote an essay called I Hate New Year's Day. He was imprisoned by Mussolini's fascist regime for his outspoken criticism of the government and his agitation on the part of the working class. The essay is about how capitalist ruling class legitimates its own control over the state and civil society through the manipulation of dominant cultural forms.
